What is a chimney cowl?

Essentially a chimney cowl is a metal cover that is fixed to the top of your chimney that allows smoke to ventilate out, but limits ingress into your chimney from issues such as excess rainfall or birds and bird waste.

How can a chimney cowl help prevent birds nesting in a chimney?

A chimney cowl can also limit gusts of wind affecting the smoke in your fireplace, ensuring that you don’t experience smoke blowing back into the fireplace and into your room, rather than rising upwards as you would normally expect.

Chimney cowls are also essential to help prevent birds nesting in your chimney place. Jack daws, often use chimneys as a place to nest, collecting large amounts of twigs and nest material over a period of time. A jackdaws nest is usually large and will block the chimney causing both a fire and CO risk and requires considerable work to be removed. Bird droppings down a chimney can also be a nuisance, especially where a fireplace is not regularly in use.

A chimney that is not in use should be capped with a vent cap. This prevents animals or rain from entering but still allows a little ventilation through the chimney to reduce the likelihood of damp.
